The committee will also guide the development of clinical guidance to assist General Practitioners (GPs) and health professionals in the diagnosis, treatment and management of these complex illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2018, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport issued its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Committees\/House\/Health_Aged_Care_and_Sport\/BiotoxinIllnesses\/Report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inquiry Report into Biotoxin-related Illnesses<\/a>. The Committee reviewed the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of biotoxin-related illnesses and recommended that the Department of Health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">conduct a review into the treatment of patients presenting with complex illnesses that are difficult to diagnose such as biotoxin-related illnesses and those with CIRS-like conditions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>develop clinical guidelines for GPs for the diagnosis, treatment and management of CIRS-like conditions, in consultation with patient groups, medical practitioners, and health bodies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ISEAI staff member Caleb Rudd, on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toxicmould.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toxic Mould Support Australia<\/a> (TMSA), and ISEAI Diplomate Dr. Sandeep Gupta, on behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciids.org.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Australian Chronic Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Society<\/a> (ACIIDS), have been invited to join the committee.<\/p>\n<h3>Australian Government Research Funding<\/h3>\n<p>The<span style=\"color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">\u00a0<\/span><b>National Health and Medical Research Council<\/b>, <span style=\"letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); color: var(--body_typography-color);\">Australia&#8217;s main source of public scientific funding, has a AUD $2 million grant opportunity for research into Biotoxin-related illnesses in Australia. <\/span>The objectives of the 2021 targeted call for research are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop a scientifically valid, evidence-based understanding of the pathophysiology and aetiology of CIRS and other biotoxin-related illnesses.<\/li>\n<li>Establish a case definition for CIRS and other biotoxin-related illnesses that will guide testing and diagnosis, including the identification of potential biomarkers.<\/li>\n<li>Develop an evidence base that will underpin treatment and management strategies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More details can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grants.gov.au\/Go\/Show?GoUuid=907533d7-4da6-4fff-bada-f1f5701890bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the grant page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>PhD Research<\/h3>\n<p>Lisa Coulburn has <a href=\"https:\/\/toxicmould.org\/research-survey-for-dampness-and-mould-in-australian-homes-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched an online survey<\/a> as part of her PhD for the <strong>Queensland University of\u00a0 Technology<\/strong>. This survey covers the three main aspects<strong><i>\u2014<\/i><\/strong>home environment, health, financial<strong><i>\u2014<\/i><\/strong>of participants who have experienced dampness and mould in an Australian home. This type of research is sorely lacking in Australia and could help inform future research.<\/p>\n<h3>Australian Mainstream Media<\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>National television<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Broadcaster <strong>SBS<\/strong> televised a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/the-feed\/meet-the-queensland-dad-who-almost-died-from-mould\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">segment on CIRS<\/a> on their program <strong>The Feed<\/strong> on June 22. This focussed on Sean Di Lizio&#8217;s story of exposure to water-damaged buildings, subsequent development of a multi-system, multi-symptom illness, and eventual recovery. It also featured an interview with Dr. Sandeep Gupta, along with an industrial hygienist, and a toxicologist. Sean has also written an in-depth <a href=\"https:\/\/toxicmould.org\/the-good-news-is-your-illness-isnt-real-seans-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> on TMSA about his journey.<\/p>\n<p>A shorter segment on preventing and remediating mold was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_20mG0NzOck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">televised in March<\/a> on <strong>7 News<\/strong>, and featured the head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildingbiology.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Building Biology Australia<\/a> Nicole Bijlsma, PhD.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>National radio<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In May, popular youth radio station <strong>Triple J<\/strong> broadcast a segment on their <strong>Hack<\/strong> program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/triplej\/programs\/hack\/hack\/13340440\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Is your rental making you sick?<\/em><\/a>, that also featured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/triplej\/programs\/hack\/mould-in-rentals-is-making-young-people-sick\/13349324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>National news articles<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mould, water-damaged buildings, and the health issues they factor into have featured prominently in the mainstream media so far this year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-02-20\/call-for-landlords-to-tell-tenants-about-mould-problems-before\/13136920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-02-20\/call-for-landlords-to-tell-tenants-about-mould-problems-before\/13136920&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1625275006135000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHwT7KDS8jdLR8D7Xty20MHkz61BQ\">Feb 20. <em>Mould in rental homes under the spotlight as family claims health problems from mouldy house<\/em>.
